A pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in treating the unique needs of children from birth through age 18 or so. As I'm sure you know, children under the age of 12 have very different medical risks and needs than an adult of 40 years. They are at higher risk of a variety of mild illnesses and have little to no medical history to rely on. They require regular well checks and monitoring of weight and height, in addition to traditional checking in for sore throats. They also require forms to be filled out for school related activities and vaccines for school.
A pediatrician handles all of this on a regular basis and so is familiar with the likely diagnoses and protocols. They also generally have a child-oriented office and waiting room as well as a developed bedside manner for their pediatric patients.

I've had good pediatricians and bad ones, I advise anyone looking for a pediatrician to ask around at drop off time or check with their local parenting groups. Parents love to talk about their kids health, and you'll get an earful about a variety of doctors just by asking a few questions.

The job of a pediatrician is to monitor the development of and treat the common diseases of children (varicella, nasopharyngitis, tonsillitis, measles, mumps ...), from birth to adolescence.

A paediatrician can specialise as does any other doctor but his/her skills are adapted for children. He is trained to know how to dispense drugs with regards to the changing weight, development an specific age of a child - factors most doctors who deal with adult patients do not generally have to calculate for each of their patients.

A paediatrician cares for all newborns and permits their discharge from hospital.

A pediatrician is also responsible for supporting and helping parents to cope with the illness of their children, to give them advice in terms of healthcare, food, hygienic ... his role includes identifying wider issues - psychological, educational, etc..

Qualities: A pediatrician should be patient and approachable, attentive to both the child and the parents and most of all be able to put a child at ease.
