An anesthesiologist is a qualified doctor who has specialized in the administration of anesthesia.

An extensive knowledge of the way the body functions and the diseases that afflict the body enables anesthesiologists to manage the administration of anesthesia especially in critical procedures involving the heart or brain and elderly patients with diabetes, hypertension or other complications. Since the selection of the appropriate drug and dosage is critical in complicated operations, the anesthesiologist plays a very valuable role in assisting the surgeon.

Anesthesiologists are responsible for anesthesia, which means to take away the feelings from the whole or a part of the body where surgery will take place. They are the ones that start the operation and then when anesthesia is done, the surgeon does his/her job.

One of my cousins is an anesthesiologist, but he works here in Bnagladesh. So, not sure if he can be of your help.

An anaesthesiologist sedates patients before surgery. They perform a preoperative consultation to determine that the medical history of the patient is not contra-indicative to being sedated. This consultation also helps him to determine the dosage and timings of the anaesthesia needed for an individual patient. :

The preoperative consultation includes asking the patient about allergies, previous operations, ongoing medical treatments and so on in order to assess all possible risks related to anaesthesia.

The anaesthesiologist will also explain about the procedure of sedation in order to reassure the patient. During the operation he will monitor vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, electrocardiogram), and will adjust the doses of anaesthesia as needed.

The anesthesiologist is also responsible for waking the patient and for treating their pain after surgery.
