How safe is orthoscope surgery?

BAD SPRAIN oCT. 8TH 2008. Had therpy for 7 weeks and then the company doctor sent me for an MRI. I then went to an ortropedic surgeon to get his opion on my MRI. He said it showed three bruised bones and I had a hole in my cartilage on the outside of my left ankle! He suggested to go in and clip the torn cartilage and maybe drill holes in the bone to promote cartilage growth! Is this safe and common procedure? I work for UPS and want to make sure this is done right so mI can heal soon and my ankle can take my rough type of work!

The word "orthoscopic" is often confused with "arthroscopic" which refers to the viewing of joints. Knee surgery performed with a small scope is arthroscopic knee surgery, not orthoscopic knee surgery. Orthoscopic means having correct vision or producing it.

Arthroscopy (also called arthroscopic surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Arthroscopic procedures can be performed either to evaluate or to treat many orthopaedic conditions including torn or damaged cartilage.

All surgery has risks and benefits. The risks are pretty similar in all cases: bleeding, infection, bad anesthesia side effects (includes death), bad result, injury to blood vessels and nerves which could cause ischemia, loss of feeling, loss of use of limb, loss of limb, possible allergic reactions to meds, antibiotics, pain meds, pain, long recovery time, scars. Does that sound safe? Actually it usually is a no problemo procedure.
