How to I treat a torn cartilage injury while waiting for surgery?

I have torn the cartilage in my knee after a heavy fall. I am on the waiting list for an arthroscopy, but have been given no advice on how to cope with the injury (which is very painful) in the meantime. I am a Supply teacher so if I don't work, I don't get paid. However, teaching involves standing all day. What should I do? My knee is very swollen and sore, and I have a great deal of difficulty sleeping as it is so uncomfortable. Any advice on how to cope would be appreciated - what should I be doing, and what shouldn't I be doing. Thank you.

Make a visit with your general practice MD first of all. Make him aware of the pain and that your job requires standing for extended periods of time. If the doctor does what he is supposed to, he will issue you a prescription for Vicodin or something to that effect. This will help with the pain and allow you to do your job. Another thing you can do is take a coral calcium and glucosamine suppliment until the day of your surgery.

OK first you need to ice every day , and let this stay on over a wet towel so it dont frost bite the skin, and get a tall stool thats light weight and carry it around with you and set while you are teaching , and keep the leg as straight as you can and rest it while you can , and dont walk up or down stairs if you dont have to this just puts more pressure on it, and maybe tear it more, and rest it . and put a pillow under the heel of a night or the whole foot and one under the knee to keep it from selling so much!
