How to treat a swollen thumb?

Area around one side of thumb is swollen and very sore. Entire thumb is enlarged and hard to the touch. The sore and swollen area around the thumb nail hurts even to a very light touch. Have soaked in Epsom salts and tried to pierce to squeeze out whatever is in there. Too sore to pierce deep enough. Swelling occurred out of the blue; no injury to the thumb at all! Think some germ got in around the nail, or a bug bite. Must be able to do a home remedy, since have no money or health insurance.

Thumb is throbbing and sore to touch. [Excess] pain has eased over course of day with soaking (Epsom salts) and taking ibuprophen (400 mg every 4 hours). Underside of thumb is sore and hard. Soreness around thumb joint and at base of thumb. Need anti-biotic?

It may be an infection. In that case apply tea tree oil or liquid vitamin E and keep it bandaged. I had a similar condition where my index finger was involved. I hope this helps.

I would try and ice it to see if the swelling goes down. if there is no cut or anything, it may not be an external infection.

if ice doesn't help and it stays swollen, it might be best to go to the ER or your primary care doctor and get it checked out.

I am having the same problem.

I was going to the States on a trip....long story, not a holiday or fun trip. But I did some gardening the day before I was due to leave. The next day on the plane I noticed my thumb was a little sore. The next few days it started to swell and get very sore. There was no sign of broken skin, no splinter or wound. I did squeeze the thumb and it hurt like hell, but the skin split and pus and blood came out. I tried soaking it in hot salt water and used a soap and sugar poultice. However, this didnt seem to help. So had to go to a Medical Centre in Dallas. Well they wanted blood tests and tetinus injections...all at a cost. I have no insurance here and not much money. I asked for some antibiotics and never saw a Dr, just a Docs assistant. I had to pay 110 USD and got some tablets called Sulfameth/Trimethoprim. I have been taking them for 3 days now..I still have a very sore and swollen thumb.

As soon as you notice the swelling I would suggest putting ice on the thumb. You should take medication like ibuprofen for a few days to see if the swelling goes down. If the swelling spreads or the thumb becomes more painful then it would be best to see a doctor.
