I need to get off Xanax!

Hello,
I have been taking Xanax (self prerscribed) for about three years... I take a 4mg (bar) or sometimes more everyday. I need to get off these but the withdraw is horrible. I also have heard that quitting "cold turkey" can cause seizures or even death?. Please help me... I don't want my life to be controlled by these pills anymore!
-Josh
P.S. I have no health insurance so I can't go to a Doctor for any help.

OK here's a story ill give you and i want you to try this and you can get off thses things yourself and you need to take your time with this and get off at a rate that will help you not hurt you , heres form an unknown source.

At one time an MD had me on 11 mg per day of Xanax for panic attacks. It worked, but I was always in a fog and my memory suffered dramatically. I'm no MD, but I finally got sick of it, tapered myself down on my own. Started with .25 mg decrease a day for 5-7 days. Experienced only mild edginess at this rate. After a week or so the edginess subsided to the point I would cut dose by another .25 mg. Took me almost 4 mos., but have gone from 11 mg to .75 per day. Have now switched M.D.,s, explained situation to him, and he keeps me on maintenance dose of .25 mg/ 3 times day. My body has adjusted over time and this lower dose works just as effectively for me in preventing panic attacks. Still have concerns about taking it daily, being at the mercy of a pill, but it offers me the chance to experience life without the misery of panic disorder.
