There are several causes of adult onset memory loss. The number one cause in america is Alzheimer's disease. This is caused by the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain. The formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are thought to contribute to the degradation of the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain.
Another idea is that the lack of mental stimulation can contribute to the memory loss. This uses the idea that your brain is much like a muscle and without use it can begin to atrophy and die.
Another thought is that the aggregation of chemicals and toxins over the years causes deterioration of the neurons in your brain. This can be from medications, abused drugs, alcohol, etc.
Also, with age, our vascular system becomes less efficient, and the amount of blood supplying the brain and neurons can deminish, causing a lack of proper nutrients and oxygen to necessary structures for memory and recall. There’s a relative loss of neurons with age, which can affect the activity of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and their receptors
The hippocampus is the structure in our brains that is responsible for memory. The hippocampus is especially vulnerable to age-related deterioration, and that can affect how well you retain information.
hope this answers your question!
