When you go to a psychiatrist for the first time, the first thing they'll do is diagnose you so they know what kind of treatment you need, or if you need any at all. Once that has been established, and it turns out that you either have a mental disorder or even symptoms of one, your treatment begins. To diagnose you, a psychiatrist will ask you about your life and everything that prompted you to make an appointment, for example, suicidal thoughts.

A psychiatrist may or may not prescribe you medication, as well as weekly therapy, where they'd ask you to talk about everything you need to talk about and any problems you may be having, how the therapy and medication is helping you, etc. They might even if give you little activities, depending on whether or not they think you need them, like, if you have low self-esteem, your psychiatrist will most likely tell you to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you´re beautiful, and things like that.

One thing is very important: a psychiatrist cannot do their job properly if you're not completely honest with them.

I live in Spain, and I used to go to a psychiatrist a couple of months ago, and she was really nice and understanding about everything. I didn't talk to any of the other psychiatrist, but I'm assuming they were, more or less, the same.

Hope this helps. :)

Psychiatrist are physicians who specialize in the study, treatment and, perhaps most importantly, prevention of mental diseases and disorders. Often a client will work closely with a psychologist or therapist who then makes recommendations to the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist does the actual diagnosing, plans the treatment course and prescribes medications, when necessary.

I cannot recommend a good psychiatrist in my area but I can recommend and excellent one I used to see in Michigan. His name is Dr. David Picone and he practices out of Lansing, Michigan.

Psychiatrist is a physician, a doctor that takes care of your health using the knowledge of medicine. They can prescribe medicine and that is one big difference between psychologist and psychiatrist. As any other physician psychiatrist can perform physical exams and order diagnostic tests.

Yes I understand. I should use more professional questions like "What?" I wonder how many people search on Google for "What?" Or how many professional people use use Google Adwords targeting the keyword "What?"

A psychiatrist heals wounds that are not visible. He diagnoses and treats mental illness and mental disorders. His patients have mental distress, behavioral or relationship problems. Listening is central to his work, he works with adults, children or the elderly. Some people come to visit him regularly. For others, it occurs only in crisis and requires different treatments: medication, therapy, or hospitalization.

When meeting a patient for the first time the psychiatrist need to make a diagnosis. To achieve this he talks to his patient to determine their mental state. He may meet for the first time during a crisis or as part of a long-term treatment (during a chronic illness). His first aim is to stabilize the mental state of his patient so that they can live as normal a life as possible.

Mild cases of mental illness can be treated by occasional visits to the psychiatrist. For those who are suffering from psychosis (manic-depression, schizophrenia ...) the psychiatrist may admit them to a psychiatric hospital as either a resident or as an outpatient.

There are a wide range of treatments available to a psychiatrist : medication (psychotropic antidepressants, anxiolytics, lithium, etc..) Or psychotherapy (analytical, cognitive, behavioural).

Perhaps a Psychiatrist can tell me why I didn't award any of the answers that Tarek gave.
