When you go to a psychiatrist for the first time, the first thing they'll do is diagnose you so they know what kind of treatment you need, or if you need any at all. Once that has been established, and it turns out that you either have a mental disorder or even symptoms of one, your treatment begins. To diagnose you, a psychiatrist will ask you about your life and everything that prompted you to make an appointment, for example, suicidal thoughts.
A psychiatrist may or may not prescribe you medication, as well as weekly therapy, where they'd ask you to talk about everything you need to talk about and any problems you may be having, how the therapy and medication is helping you, etc. They might even if give you little activities, depending on whether or not they think you need them, like, if you have low self-esteem, your psychiatrist will most likely tell you to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you´re beautiful, and things like that.
One thing is very important: a psychiatrist cannot do their job properly if you're not completely honest with them.
I live in Spain, and I used to go to a psychiatrist a couple of months ago, and she was really nice and understanding about everything. I didn't talk to any of the other psychiatrist, but I'm assuming they were, more or less, the same.
Hope this helps. :)
