Klonopin should only be taken short term. If you're on it for long periods of times you can get addicted to it, and your anxiety will increase severely. My psychiatrist will only prescribe it to me for a maximum of two weeks. It is effective, but like most psychiatric drugs it can be dangerous.
You can't go cold turkey on it either, because you can experience very harmful withdrawals. It's surprising (and disturbing) that some doctors do not know about this problem. My friend had a doctor who gave her klonopin three times a day for over three months, and she turned into a wreck.
Medications fix chemical imbalances, they can't fix deeply rotted emotional problems (which usually go hand in hand). I see a psychiatrist for my antidepressants and mood stabilizers and a psychologist for therapy. It has been very effective for me. Group therapy also worked wonders for me. (: And it was fun.
If you are feeling even the slightest bit suicidal, you need to speak with your doctor immediately. It could be a side effect of your medications. Everyone has a different combination of drugs that work for them. I've had to switch medications for years before I found one that worked for me.
