Ridges in fingernails

I have noticed that my 11 year old son has deep ridges in in fingernails. It looks as though they were swept with a wire brush. Is there a medical condition that we should consider? or is this normal?

It's unbelievable what your nails can tell you about nutrition and health. They are made up of protein and if the specific nutrients aren't there, signs can show up in less than a month through the nails.

Typically vertical ridges can indicate things as simple as iron dificiancy, poor absorption of viatamins and overall poor nutrition. It can also be a sign of kidney trouble. I would consult your son's doctor just to be sure he is getting all the nutrients he needs.

Does your son eat a well-balanced diet? Does he get exercise?

Good luck!

Thanks! I did consider these options...
We have had about 4 major family upsets, like a death, a move... etc... so routine is GONE! Meals have been taken for granted....
I will check into this.

Thanks. Brandy
