Severe leg and foot cramps

For the past 5 years, at least, I get severe cramps in my feet which travel up my leg to my hip. They can occur anytime during the day or night, but most often in the evening or at night in bed. The cramping most often starts on the outside of the foot and travels up the outside muscle of the leg. Walking does not solve the problem and sometimes I cannot walk on it. The cramping does not occur in both feet/legs at the same time. I am an active 57 year old woman who is an elementary school physical education teacher. I am on my feet all day, but have no other health problems. When I was in my early 20's I suffered from anorexia for about 4 years.

The most common cause of leg and foot cramps is calcium deficiency which is why people who are lactose intolerant are prone to this in older age. Given that you were anorexic, you may have problems with calcium and iron deficiencies.

You may want to talk to your doctor about this because if your leg cramps are due to a calcium deficiency, you may want to find ways to alleviate that problem because Osteoporosis is also caused by low calcium mostly in post menopausal women.
