What can cause a larger than a softball sized lump on my upper left side of abdomen?

I have been unable to eat beef, pork, milk products, greasy foods, etc. for 6 years. I get severe pain right below my sternum and either throw up or literally have to make myself throw up. It gets so bad that I sometimes scream. About 3 yrs ago, a golf ball sized lump came up on my left side. Basically right on top of my ribcage 1/2 inch below my breast. It has since grown larger than a softball. It is sometimes painful, hardens, appears to be bruised and feels like it is running fever, especially when I have my "usual" stomach episodes. At other times, it feels quite squishy. My PCP told me he could see and feel the lump but, when he ordered x-rays, it didn't show up. So, he decided there was nothing there. I am trying to figure out what kind of specialist I can ask to be referred to and would like a little more info on the sort of things I should be being checked for before I do.

Get yourself another PCP. Any mass or node that you describe as growing in size to the point where it inhibits normal functions could very easily be a mediastinal cyst. There are two tests available to detect these abnormal cysts - a blood test (CBC) and a CT or CAT scan. Some cysts just refuse to show up on an xray because of their composition or makeup. Most mediastinal are benign but can push against vital organs and that's what makes them a priority to identify and treat.

Thank you SO much!!! I was starting to think I was crazy or something. lol But, I ended up having another stomach attack the other night and had to go to the ER. The doc there said pretty much the same thing you did but, he couldn't do the tests there....I can't remember why....I was in too much pain to really care about that at the time. :) Anyways, thanks again.
