What harm to children from radiation exposure from Xrays?

My 12 year old son had foot xrays. I found out AFTER the technician did not put a lead apron on him! Why? What harm did this do my son? Could it cause cancer or problems with his growth or even when he's older (deformed babies)? I am worried it harmed him internally. How do I know if he's ok? what do I do now? Please I am really worried and I need answers. He's just an innocent little boy, I can't believe the incompetence of the technician!

I just had a foot x-ray today and nothing was put over me either. Probably the apron is used to protect the abdominal area of the body (like when at the dentist it is protecting your torso to have the protective apron put over the upper area of the body). As an older mom I can tell you kids get x-rayed now and then in their childhood it seems and I have never read that very infrequent exposure to x-rays triggers cancer. My husband is in the water business and I have learned from him that cancer is highly correlated to people having acidic bodies-too much sugar, carbs, carbonation etc set a person up for a body climate conducive for cancer cells to grow in. If a person stays more alkaline-the cancer cells can't reproduce in that body pH. Drink alkaline water and alkaline forming foods to help keep your body pH up, and reduce itake of acid forming foods. I'd be more concerned and focused on food and environmental exposure on a day to day basis for keeping kids healthy, so check your family's diet and the cleaning products you use. Good luck!

Your son had a localized are that was x-rayed...I do not believe that this would have any affect on your child..Having said that, if this is something that happens in the future, you have every right to ask the Technician to drape your child to limit the amount of Rads. I find myself repeating this frequently. In this day and age, one must SPEAK UP.....You have that right...I totally agree with you that if the tech is going to protect herself, then she should also protect her patient....I hope your son has a speedy recovery...I applaud you for being a loving ,concerned parent...Good Luck to you.....

I'm an xray tech and I can promise you that your son will not get cancer from a foot xray. It definetly wouldn't have hurt to throw a lead apron over him while doing it, but it's not necessary. The amount of radiation you get from a foot xray (or any extremity xray) is close to none. This did not used to be true. Now, almost all facilities have gone to digitial xray and with the use of collimation, you don't need to worry. Radiation protection is always good, but he would get more radiation taking a walk outside for a few minutes, or taking a ride in an airplane. Next time, feel free to ask (in a nice way of course) that they put a lead apron on him, it won't be a problem. Also, if a child has a medical problem that would cause him to have a lot of xrays all throughout his life, then you certainly want that child protected everytime, as xray radiation is accumulative.
