OK this is a very good question and the levels for this should be for an ideal levels at 70- 120 dl/mg better toward 90 to 110 so have this checked often and watch as to if he drinks a lot and has dry mouth and all the reg symptom of a reg diabetic.

Normal blood sugar levels are the same for adults and children who are not diabetics. A fasting sugar level of 70-99 mg/dl is normal, and a random sugar level a few hours after food of 70 -145 mg/dl is normal.

Sugar cravings are not an indication of diabetes but an indication of another dietary deficiency. In saying this many kids want sweets all the time, so this is normal. If you are anxious and worried that your 5 year son may have diabetes you should monitor him and see if he urinates and drinks more often than normal.
