Xanax is a benzodiapezine medication that is used for anxiety. It is a short acting drug that lasts for only a few hours, the XR version is an extended release that may last up to 12 hours. It can also be used to help with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome),fibromyalgia, insomnia, depression, nervousness, and in conjuction with some narcotics for pain such as cancer pain.
