Like an early pregnancy test where a woman pees on a stick, the rapid strep will detect positive for strep in minutes. It is somewhat lacking at determining the type of bacteria but only that bacteria is present in the sample. The time factor to treat is greatly reduced since most doctors use an outside lab for testing and can't get the results back as quickly. Since time is critical in treatment, doctors generally prescribe a broad spectrum antibiodic.

The Rapid Strep test only tests for the most common Strep, Group A, with an 80% accuracy rate. It does not test for non-Group A (Groups B-G) strep and the doctor probably will not prescribe antibiotics based on this LIMITED test. A second swab is usually sent to the lab for culture, hopefully then they test for the non-Group A Strep. Sometimes the culture comes back positive for Group A or Groups B-G. By then you or your child has suffered greatly with progressing Strep.
