The normal blood sugar range varies depending on whether you are fasting or whether it is a random sample after you have eaten. A fasting blood glucose level should be between 70-99 mg/dl, whereas a random blood glucose level should be between 70-145 mg/dl. Blood glucose levels slightly over these limits indicate impaired glucose tolerance, whereas levels much higher indicate diabetes.
