Hello WhipSnake,
Menstrual cramping is caused by contractions of the uterus in response to hormones and chemicals that are released in the body during this part of the menstrual cycle. In women who have menstrual cramps that are more severe than others, levels of prostaglandins can be higher, and the frequency, duration and strength of the uterine contractions are greater. In addition, if clumps and clots of uterine tissue are passed through a cervical opening that is narrow, this in itself can cause more pain.
Things you can do to feel better:
---increasing activity level (take a brisk walk);
---heating pad to the abdomen;
---get adequate rest and sleep;
---to lower levels of prostaglandins and decrease their effect, take an NSAID (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug). OTC brands are Ibuproven and Naproxen that come in various brand names packages such as Motrin, Advil and Aleve. If you have extreme difficulty with the pain of menstrual cramping, you may need to start a regular schedule of a dose twice a day starting 1-2 days before your period is due.
