Has he tried Chantrix? Maybe since he won't take pills you could grind it into his food?

The patch gives me a rash, and the gum makes me sick to. I heard of the zero smoke thing, and have heard good things about it, I however opted for the Chantix injection, a one time shot, a year smoke free.

I haven't heard of it, but as a former smoker (those college party years) I honestly believe that the physical addiction has less to do with why it is hard to quit and it's like 90% of what we try to address with the gum and nicotine replacement. Why do the majority of weight staff smoke? Because it's a social habit. Who has the lowest success rate to quit? People who have at least 2 close friends or spouses that smoke.
Here's how I kicked the habit. I identified my favorite times that I liked to smoke. After I ate, when I went out drinking and between classes with friends. Nicotine is a stimulant and we get reinforced in these situations when - so you have to change your weakest times to be aversive as opposed to rewarding.
So after I ate, I made myself go outside in the cold, no coat, no chair, so I'm freezing and miserable.
When I went out with friends I didn't bring cigarettes with me and I made a deal that if I had one cigarette I had to go home. No more drinks, nothing, my night was over. I also told my friends (invite at least one non smoker) not to let me buy any or bum any.
Between classes I would walk out with a nonsmoker from class even if we went and stood with my smoking buddies and it made me feel weird to smoke in front of the nonsmoker.
Try doing that. If you combine a nicotine treatment and some cognitition (thinking) alterations like above, it'll happen. Be patient - I think it took me about 6 or 7 tries and I finally had to quit because the love of my life is asthmatic :)
