All companies i have worked for had this policy if you did not work the day before a holiday you did not get paid for it ===except for vacation family emergencies and prearranged time off it needs to be stated in employee hand book as a company policy all employees need to know about it you can't pay one and not pay all if it was not an already established policy and you wanted to change it you should pay him this time and distribute the policy change

Only holidays that are stated on the employee hiliday scedule are subject to pay any other days you are out they do not have to pay you. Be glad you get holiday pay some companies do not offer it.

If you call in the day before or the day after my emplyer has it posted as a policy you will not get paid. Unless it is a family emergency and can be proven.
