Do you have brothers and sisters? Children? Nieces and nephews? How about a beautiful studio portrait of the entire family---with your mom in it---in a beautiful frame? Everyone could go in on the present.

One Christmas, we bought my mother-in-law a very nice photo album and we put pictures of our family events in it for her -- many of which we had celebrated at her and Dad's house for many years. We included as many pictures of Mom and Dad with the kids and grandkids and great grandkids, as we could. We made sure we included a couple of pictures of everyone. It was easy for us because we are the ones who drag along our camera to every family event, but if you don't have enough pictures of your own, ask your other family members to contribute pictures of their own that they've taken over the years. Mom was absolutely thrilled with the gift, and not only she, but the rest of our family and her friends as well. She showed the album to everyone who came to visit and had many hours of fun reminiscing with the family over the photos.

Is there some special food that your mom likes? My mother-in-law is fond of cheese, so one Christmas my sis and brother-in-law went out to Amish country and got her several different kinds of cheese from an Amish Cheese House. That gift was another big hit! Whatever food your mom likes, could you try to find an extra-special version of it that she couldn't get in a regular grocery store?

Does your mom like to go out and about but have little opportunity to do so on her own? My daughter and her hubby took his mom out on a play date. His mom loves the theater but few of her friends and family do, so as a gift they bought her tickets to a play they knew she would like for the three of them and put them in a Christmas card. Before the play they took her out for a lovely dinner at a special restaurant she had been wanting to try. Sometimes spending some quality time is the best gift you can give to a parent, especially one who is lonely.

Is there a certain old TV show that your mom used to like? My mom-in-law was a big Dallas fan so my sis-in-law got her a dvd set of the show and Mom really enjoyed watching it again.

The most boring suggestion I have is to simply buy your mom a gift certificate to a store she shops at or a restaurant she likes. Sometimes we give my mother-in-law gift certificates to the drugstore where she buys her medicine. Yes, I know this is dull but she really seems to appreciate it since she's on a limited income (as many elderly folks are these days) and she says it really helps.

Hope that spurs a few more ideas for you.

Buy a really nice frame and put a picture of you and your family (if you have one) in it. Mothers always love pictures in frames. I know, I am a mother and I love pictures of my children and their families. Especially if they are already in frames.

They both had great ideas...but I'd personally buy a DIGITAL Picture frame that rotates through the pictures, and upload old pictures and new pictures on it. Your Mother will be able to sit back on the couch and reminisce through hundreds of pictures on a digital slideshow:)
