Since the group collectively chose (by majority vote I assume) to have Good Friday off, then even those who didn't vote for it would still fall under the "elective holiday" guidelines. Typically, that should only apply to those who are normally scheduled to work on fridays. I can see if they charged him a sick day for the day he called in, but it is highly unusual for them to do both. If he had both days charged from his account then he should have been paid for both. depending on your Unions guidelines however, they may state that if you call in on a holiday, when it is your regular workday, they can penalize you a personal day.
