There is actually a misconception that Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is like the 4th of July to us in that it is the day Mexico got their independence. Mexico's independence day is actually September 16th which is the most patriotic day for Mexico.
Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
