Boxing Day is a bank holiday or a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and countries in the Commonwealth of Nations with a mainly Christian population. In South Africa this public holiday is now known as the Day of Goodwill. The name derives from the English tradition giving seasonal gifts (in the form of a "Christmas box") to less wealthy people. In the United Kingdom this was later extended to various workpeople such as labourers, servants, tradespeople and postal workers.

Boxing Day in Canada is December 26. It is a statuatory holiday. A lot of people equate Boxing Day with Black Friday in the US because stores have big sales on Boxing Day. It is not uncommon for people to line up for hours outside some stores in hopes of getting one of the few incredibly marked down items. Personally, I just enjoy another day with my family and leave the shopping to other people.
