How can I find out if there is a gator living in the small lake/pond thats out back of my house?

There doesn't appear to be a gator in the lake, but in Florida you never know. There are lots of house around the lake with back yards facing. I'm nervous about letting my small dog out on a leash in the back yard because the lake is so close.

You could go swimming for a while. See if you lose any limbs in the process. *joking*

What about putting up surveillance cameras and bate to see if you can draw it out. what about talking to neighbors to see if they saw anything.

If you have a lake in Florida most Likely there is an Alligator living in it. I wouldn't leave you dog tied on a leash alone. Alligators are more active in the summer months and will most likely be seen sun bathing mid morning to late afternoon. watch out for mudd wallows (an Alligator will roll in the wet mud and leave an indentation in the dirt) that is a tell tale sign there are alligators. If you go out on a warm night and shine a flashlight on the lake look for glowing eyes. Even if there is no alligators in the pond now that doesn't mean there won't be one there tomorrow. They are loosing more a more natural habitats every day and so they search for new places to live. Good Luck.
