The standard height of a stair handrail is between 30 and 34 inches above the actual step. You may want to check county building and safety codes in your area before installation.
The guy above me is right. Also make sure that you can not pass a 4" diameter sphere through the railing. use a 2x4 for spacing. This is code
According to ADA Accessibility Guidelines handrails shall be installed such that the top of the gripping surface is between 34” and 38” above the nosing of the step. Before installing a handrail please verify all local code requirements.
