Why does your gas hot water heater pilot keep going out?

Heater pilot may be stopped up with curd from the gas and turn the gas off the heater, and take a broom straw or little wire and punch around and get the stuff loose and then take a vacuum cleaner hose and suck this out and see if this helps!
