Borax mixed with honey or peanut butter.

Also, if you find their nest or hill, place black pepper, cayenne, cinammon, or chili powder around the entrance.

Get a bag full of salt and sprinkle in ample amounts on areas which are infested with ants.
It is not only simple ,natural but also harmless and will not cost much money.

Plant Marigolds around the garden! Ants dislike marigolds and will not go through them!
Feeding them salt kills the ants.

Peppermint may get rid of the ants but it will take over the garden also. If you use peppermint get a car tire and bury it leaving about 1/2 a inch above ground. Plant your peppermint inside and the roots will just keep going around the inside of the tire.

A line of Boric Acid around the perimeter of your garden, or across the path that the ants are taking will do the trick. It's non toxic to children and animals but deadly to hard shelled creatures. It loses it's effectiveness when wet so repeat for a few days and the ant problem should be taken care of.
