Can a employer force an employee to work overtime on his or hers schedule days off

I work 4 days a week 10 hours a day. The company that I worked for always schedules us to work overtime on our scheduled days off. They feel that they can force the issue. This sometimes happens a couple time a month. Can they force us to work on our days off ?

I've been down this road myself! By working the set time of days and hours assigned to you, you are fulfilling your end of the 40 hour work week. Don't give them any leverage by being late or missing days off. Did you consent to being available "on call"? Scheduled days off are just that! Days away from place of employment! I personally refuse to work for anyone who won't honor their word and use bully tactics! If your not happy and can afford a change in your trade, I say go for it! Dust off your resume, and see whats available. You could be just what someone is looking for! Just find out and explore your options before taking action, and don't tell your "friends at work" your plan of action. Life is too short to be bullied by an employer who doesn't care about your time off! Good luck!

Like everyone else has stated, if you are salaried and were aware of this when you accepted the posistion, then you are out of luck.

There are some companies that "require" 50-60 each week as a "normal", so working on your days off may compse this time. Now if you ware hourly, you must get paid for the extra time. If they refuse to pay for this then you have a legal leg to stand on.

My opinion, find another job.
