Denied employment for bad credit

I understand that when employers do background checks on potential employees, they may include credit checks. The problem is, I do not have good credit and have not been able to find a decent job in 13 months and creditors are after me to pay. Could it be possible that I have been rejected for employment because of my credit? If so, how can I get a decent job that is going to allow me to live on my own?
