Job promotion

I am a bank manager over the age of 50. I have recieved great reviews for job performance over the past few years and continue to achieve the goals that have been set for me. Can I be denied a job promotion because of my age, even though I have the most expeience and am the most qualified person? Can someone younger be brought in from the outside to fill the position?

According to the law, you cannot be denied a promotion simply because of your age. However, this can be difficult to prove unless you can prove that the person receiving the position was less qualified.

Don't be fooled into thinking that just because you hit your goals and perform your current job well, that you're ready for a promotion. You need to show that this job is a good fit, both motivationally and professionally.

Most organizations prefer to promote from within because of the morale it creates, but I've seen some people who think that they deserve the promotion simply because 'I was there first' Keep an open mind and prepare for the interview. If you are truly qualified and are able to demonstrate that, you'll have a leg up because you are internal.

I am the only person with management experience and I was told there will be no interviews for the position it will be filled by a appointment.

No, you legally can't be denied a job because of age. However, it does happen, whether its obvious or not. The thing to always remember is that a lot of the times, you feel like you are the best fit for a job, but the people higher in the company may think otherwise. Its up to you to prove to them that the job should be yours. Even if you reached your goals set, and have been getting great reviews, perhaps they may see it as the job you are at now is a good fit for you. If you can prove that the next step up would be even more successful, they will promote you in an instant.

Try not to think its because of age if someone else gets hired that is considerably younger, as sometimes it really does not have to do with age at all. The person could just be more qualified, in the eyes of the higher-ups. In fact, if you do believe its about age, it can subconsciously make a negative impact in your current position, and further assure management that they made the right decision not promoting you.

If you can somehow prove that it is age, then you may have a case. But, that would be extremely hard to do so.

With all this said, you also stated that you seem like the only one within the company right for the job, as well as the company saying there will be no interviews. So, it all looks good for you so far! Good luck, and hopefully you get the job!

Age is never a fact on a promotion in fact it is more likely for an older person to get a promotion since it is a fact that they have more experience and are most likely to have faced the different situations a job may come across with. Please note sometimes changing your job and asking for a higher wage is the best way to go.
