How should I deal with the real estate group that doesn't want to compensate me for my troubles with their maintenance?

About two weeks ago, my ceiling fell on my boyfriend and I while we were sleeping. It woke us both up. He almost cut his feet to shreds. I had insulation in my mouth, and we didn't get any response from the "emergency" maintenance numbers we called several times over the course of about six hours. We both missed out on work time, and have had to sleep on the floor in the living room since it happened. When I went in to talk to the manager of the real estate group about how I felt I should be compensated the secretary laughed at my frustration, due to spending two of the first three or so weeks I'd been in the apartment, and told me the manager probably wouldn't agree to credit my account even half of a months rent.
