The answer is HIGHLY dependent on the department for which you plan to apply. However there are some basic qualifications that will most likely be encountered in a career department the United States.

-Must be 18 or 21 years of age (at time of employment)
-Must hold valid driver's license
-Must be eligible U.S. citizen
-Must have at least high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
-No dishonorable discharge from the military
-No felony convictions
-No henious (or surplus of) misdemeanors
-No surplus of traffic violations
-Must be willing to submit to (expect some if not all of the following) a drug test, written exam, medical exam, physical agility test, interview, and/or polygraph.
-Must attend rigorous fire training academy and achieve necessary certifications
-Some departments require that you are a residence of the city/county/state or surrounding area
