There are lots of legitimate ways to make money from home and online. a lot of ways involve freelance work or content creation. You can make a decent amount of money if you put in the effort using the many and varied, legitimate ways to make money. The key is to try different things simultaneously so you have different streams of income coming in.

Here are some legit ways to make money at home and online that cost nothing but a little time and effort:

Blog - You can create your own blog and get Adsense or other advertising revenue from it. This may take a while to build up, but if you find the right niche and can build readership you will make money.

Article writing – I’m a big fan of earning residual income from creating content. There are several places where you can write articles or submit other content like videos etc. to earn money. With most of these you will need an Google Adsense account. Basically you write articles on whatever topic you want, submit them and when people read the articles or click on the ads you make money. Once you get a feel for it you can work on using keyword and search engine optimization to increase the number of people who find you content and click on ads. Here are just a few of the places that you can submit content to and start earning money:

eHow http://www.ehow.com/members/modough.html
Infobarrel http://www.infobarrel.com/signup.php?ref_id=2117
Bukisa http://www.bukisa.com/join/16076
Xomba http://www.xomba.com/referral/777d2376

Affiliate marketing – Kind of like blogging where you create your own website. But in this case you create a site based around a specific product or category of products and when people buy things from other sites through your portal you make commissions. This might cost a little bit of money upfront to get hosting and a domain name for your site (Dreamhost is cheap http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?550052)
, but it is still pretty cheap and can be lucrative if you get the right product, keyword and good content. For example, I have a little affiliate website I just started but haven’t worked on much (www.bestpersonalfinancebooks.com).

Freelance tasks – If you have certain skills then you can do freelance jobs through sites such as www.elance.com. They pay pretty well, but you have to be able to commit to specific projects and execute well. At the lower end of the spectrum are sites like Amazon.com’s www.mturk.com. This site lists lots of small, menial tasks where you do little things and get paid small amounts, but it could build up and is nice if you are bored.

Mystery shopping – There are lots of scams around this, usually people trying to sell you lists of places to mystery shop or ebooks about how to do it. Never pay anyone anything! There are dozens of legitimate mystery shopping firms that are easy to sign up with, pay on a job-by-job basis and don’t ask for any money upfront. You can find good advice from people who are doing it and lists of companies that hire mystery shoppers at www.volition.com. It will not make you rich, but it will be extra money and some of the perks are nice too. I did mystery shopping for a company that serviced Starbucks and Chipotle so I got free meals and drinks plus a little money. My favorite though was doing movie checks – free movie!

Anyway, those are some things that I have actually done to start earning money online in my spare time. Here are a couple of articles I have written that elaborate on how to make money online and give some other legitimate ways to build income streams:

http://www.ehow.com/how_5171652_turn-income-stream-raging-river.html

You will notice a some referral links and a couple of plugs for my own online content in my answer. I’m not trying to be spammy, it’s just that these are the sites I use and know about, they just happen to have referral programs that can help with augmenting your online returns. Signing up through someone else’s referral link does not take anything away from your earnings, the referrals are paid out of the company’s cut of advertising revenue. Link building is also an essential element of using online content to make money. The old saying ‘if you build it they will come’ doesn’t really apply anymore. Nowadays it should be ‘if you link it they will come’ : )

Good luck with your online and at home money making!

PS – One last piece of advice: sign up for a PayPal account. You don’t have to use it to pay for anything, but you will need one to receive payments from most services and companies doing online and at home work.

You also might want to check out odesk.com, it's a pretty good site to find online work if you are qualified.
