Are you suppose to burn flags still?

When you dispose of a flag are you still suppose to burn it or is that just an old formality? Can you go to jail if you recycle it into... oh lets say a nice dog bed for fido?

Jodi Kay, I'm ashamed! You used to be a Cub Scout. . . .

Local VFW posts generally collect damaged flags and have a special flag burning ceremony each year.

Actually, anyone can burn a flag as long as they do it in a dignified manner. This is a common misconception that you do need to go to a VFW Post or Scout group. My VFW post conducts one every year, however, at that ceremony we try to get information out to people that anyone can conduct their own ceremony as long as it is in a dignified manner.
