Can a person you live with keep your stuff when you move?

Hi,
We (Me,my wife 2 kids 18&19) and 2 dogs came from MI. because my neice asked if we would like to move in with them and try and find a place down here plus help them out with food while there. Well we had to rent a storage unit because we had alot of stuff. Anyway. HEr live in boyfriend talked us into letting the storage unit go and storing our stuff on their porch. Well my wife got a part ime job after about a month and we were giving them $500. in food stamps a month plus the wife was buying househole items every 2 weeks. Well then he said the next week would would also have to pay them an extra $100 every 2 weeks out of my wifes check. Well the very day she got her check we found a trailer so we moved out. They had called the cops i guess to make sure we didnt steal anything but the cop just stood there and shook his head. But after we got all moved out we noticed we had forgot a few things. And they are saying if we give them the $100. they will give us the items back and if not we dont get them. Now some of the stuff isnt even woth the trouble but they are keeping my wifes wedding items and some of my daughters things. We called the cops and told them about it to see if we could get them to help us get the stuff but they said we would have to take them to court. I have no idea where this court is or how i would get this all going. Please help!
