Can anyone withdraw money from a person's checking account without their authorization?

Tax, Inc. withdrew $500.00 from my checking account without my consent and then attempted to withdraw another $1,200.00. This in turn caused bounced checks and deliquent accounts to occur with my creditors. I have called and recieved to justification as to why I was not notified either in writing, phone, or email that this was going to be done. I feel that I am entitled to some kind of compensation for the financial and mental stress this has put on my life. Am I right for pursuing this matter or should I let it go?"
