Can my employer fire me because of a death in my family?

Yesterday a member of my family passed away and I called into work. My assistant manager said that if I didn't show up I was fired.

If you live in a state with an "Employment At Will" policy then the answer is Yes. The proper process would be to go in to work, bypass the assistant manager and go straight to the HR dept or highest up the chain possible. Most companies have a policy for bereavement.
