Civil Court - Answering a Subpoena

In Minnesota, Statute 357.22 states that a witness must be paid by check along with the subpoena. It goes on to say "No person is obliged to attend as a witness in any civil case unless one day's attendance and travel fees are paid the witness in advance."

I have been served a subpoena to appear as a witness in a civil case but was not given any payment along with the subpoena. Am I reading this correctly that I legally do not have to appear?
