Can I copyright my website before it's published? Is that a wise idea to do before I publish it on the web?

Don't bother, other than to put a notice at the bottom of your website:

Copyright 2009 [your company name]

You cannot copyright the layout or colors of your website, but you can copyright anything you have written on your website. Of course, if someone steals your written content, there is likely nothing you can do (they may be from another country, etc.)

So the bottom line is, put your copyright notice in the text of your website, and then move on to more important things that you actually have control over.
