You have to be a resident in order to file for divorce in a specific locality. The residency requirement in Las Vegas (and all of Nevada) is 6 weeks. That is, you must be a resident for 6 weeks before filing for divorce. If it is uncontested, if becomes final 6 weeks after that.

You have to file in the state you reside in to retain a lawyer. If you move you have to wait till you become a resident of that state before you can file for divorce. That takes 12 months! You don't want to move till after you have filed.
