DOES A DEFENDANT HAVE A RIGHT TO THEIR LEGAL FILES?

MY HUSBAND WAS CONVICTED FOR A CRIME HE DIDN'T COMMIT. HIS COURT APPOINTED ATTORNEY CONVINCED HIM HE DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE TO WIN & TOLD HIM IF HE FOUGHT HE'D DO 20 YRS INSTEAD OF 6 YRS THAT THE DA OFFERED.THE JUDGE WOULDN'T LET HIM HAVE ANOTHER ATTORNEY UNLESS HE COULD PAY FOR IT. THE JUDGE EVEN TOLD HIM HE BETTER BE GLAD HE TOOK THE OFFER CAUSE IF LEFT UP TO HIM HE'D GOT ALOT MORE TIME. THEY NEVER WOULD LET US SEE THE EVIDENCE, ONLY TOLD US WHAT THEY HAD. DOES HE HAVE A RIGHT TO GET HIS FILES (RECORDS) FROM THE ATTORNEY & THE D.A.?
