Does my employer have to give me time off for a death in the family?

My mother-in-law died yesterday. There was some conflict over giving me time off. Does my boss have to give me time off by law?

The Family Medical Leave Act covers any sickness of your own, death or serious illness of spouse, child, or pregnancy leave for up to 26 unpaid days, but not for mother-in-law. This relationship is covered by only 3 days.
