Elder care

Indiv 90 yrs old, somewhat feeble, and unreliable to take care of herself. Stubborn, insists she is able, has no immediate relatives, just nieces and nephews. Appears to have no one designated POA. Was found recently in her 2 story home, fallen, having been on landing to second floor for over 12 hrs. We live in indiana, and are wondering what if any safety nets are in place to care for an indiv who is not willing to take responsibility for her inability to fend for herself. Neighbors appear to be disinterested in checking on her daily. and no relatives either to do this.

This is a very difficult and sensitive situation. As long as they are mentally stable, there is little that you can do to force them to change. A couple of options include applying for conservatorship. You will need an attorney and about $5,000 though to do this and the court can appoint you as a gaurdian or POA. You can contact your local crisis team (call the police department for the number) and report that she is unable to care for herself because of physical/mental problems which is known as self-neglect.

It sounds like to see what you can do and what services your state offers, you would contact the Indiana State Department of Health at 1-800-433-0746.

Good luck!
