Executor of an estate

I have been asked to be an executor of an estate for a friend of a friend. My friend is pastor of a small church and the executor of the estate for one of his parishoners. This parishoner has bone cancer and is not expected to live long and wishes to give his estate to the church which puts the pastor in a tough situation. This parishoner's mother died in New Orleans after Katrina but it was months before they found her and DNA was taken to determine that she was this man's mother. He can't get money from her estate until the DNA is examined but technically he has money as he is her only son.(Ya just can't make this stuff up) I need to know what I am getting myself into if I agree to be the executor. Help

You will be makeing all the dis, from money , land , and other things like paying bills , taking in debts owed to the estate, and if there are in living relations, then you will have to fight with them over this, and may end up in court , with them for years to come . lol just thougt i would tell you the truth of the thing,.

Make sure the parishioner has drawn up a will that expresses his wishes. If he wants to avoid his estate being contested, out of kindness and good sense he needs to leave a bequest of a generous amount to the lady who may be found to be his mother. If he disinherits her or all of his other family it leaves the will open to be contested by any surviving family. Make sure the will is reviewed by a local probate attorney to make sure it meets all requirements of that state's law.

That's too much. A person in sound mind can give his property to anyone. He needs a will. The executor has to take over the financial aspects of the estate, pay the bills, make sure the will is properly followed. It can be a lot or a little work, and the executor is entitled to be paid for the effort.
