Fiction Libel or Slander

If I write a book and offer it for public sale, and if that book has characters that mimic to a pretty good degree pubic, presidential candidates but I change their names - and note that this is a totally fictional product, am I opening myself up to any kind of lawsuit? How can I protect myself?
