How do i get the money on brother's checking account and am i obligated to pay his debts if any?

Brother died intestate. I have little info re his assets or estate other than a check book in my possession. I have paid for the cremation and will soon be sent the death certificates. i do not live in the same state as the deceased and have no idea whether or not i must go thru probate, how that is to be done without going to FL and if i must have an attorney. there is no spouse, issue or living relatives other than myself.

Does Florida have a dollar amount below which one does not have to probate? What is taking so long to answer my questions?

Probably taking long because it's a very specific question. I would assume, but have no experience, that if there is a will that comes first in who to contact. Then, if not it would come to closest living relatives. I would probably guess using an attorney that is specialized in such matters is wise. You never know who might come to try and collect if there were any assets. I'm sorry to hear about his passing.
