Promisary notes

My husband and I are curious to know in the State of Oregon, if a promisarry note for repayment will be help accountable if the person left for 3 months(to who payment was to go to) with no way to contact them. We had a situation arise to where payment couldnt be made and were not able to contact the payee. They have been home for a little over a week now and are trying to sue us for the whole amount. We were in no way contacted by them to find out if payment was sent or why we were late. What can you tell us in this situation?

They may of had their mail forwarded to them for 3 months, did you try to send pymt & got it back in the mail, which would be great proof it is not your fault.
