Should I hire an attorney?

I am going to small claims court next month because a former boyfriend wants me to pay him back the money he spent to finish a bedroom in my basement. I told him from the start that I couldn't afford it and he insisted on doing it for me. He said it was for "us" although it was my house and we didn't live together. I have all the receipts and there was absolutely no agreement, written or verbal, to ever pay back the money. We broke up a year ago and he is just now deciding to ask for money. Do I need an attorney when I go to court for this?

The attorney fee would probably be more than what the basement cost.

A lawyer would probably cost you more then what you spent. I agree with prime there.

I personally don't see what ground he standing on to think that you will have to pay up. Since it will be your word against his saying that him paying for this was for "us".

But it wouldn't hurt to talk with a lawyer about this if you are concerned that he may or might win.
