Speeding Tickets

I received my first ever speeding ticket in VA and I am a MD resident. It was a 85 in a 65, what will happen? Will there be any fines or points given?

Well when you recieved your ticket it should of came with a fine that needs to be paid. Points were also added to your license however after a few years these will go away as long as you have a clean driving record.

Since you live out of state you can either just pay the full fine and take the points on your license, or else you will have to travel back to VA to the county where you got the ticket if you wanted to try and plea bargain in down.

Depending on how close you live to the county you got the ticket it may be a good idea because 20 over is a 5 point ticket. You could lose your license at 8-11 points in a 2 year period. I don't know where you are at, but that could be bad if you already have a few points.

Yes they will take points at that speed most likely 3 or 4 wich will make your insurance cost more! You can get a lawyer for a couple hundred bucks to negotiate it to smething that doesnt take point if you have had a clean record for a long time..or you can go to court and plead no contest and ask the judge if you can take a deffensive driving class! Then you have to go 6 months without getting another ticket and nothing will go on your driving record! But either way no jail time will have to be done! And the lawyer can do the deal for you so you dont have to go to court..but you will have to set thrue a two hour driving siminar in the state you got the ticket! But first call and see if your state recognizes the state you got the ticket in..some state dont turn it in to others..but that differs from state to state! unless you have a commercial drivers licence the it goes to all states..make sure you pay the ticket because they will put a bench warrant out for you wich meens if they get you in the state you got the ticket in will put you in jail if caught back in there state! Its confusing i know..First thing to do is see if your states recognises the sate you got the ticke in! if yes get a lawyer from the state you got the ticket and they can handle it for you!

In Virginia, when you are convicted of a traffic violation, the court notifies the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV then posts the conviction to your driving record and assigns demerit points according to the severity of the offense. The DMV will also notify your insurance company upon their request.

In Virginia speeding 15 to 19 mph above the posted speed limit is a 4 point moving violation and can also be termed reckless driving. A conviction of this citation will result in 4 demerit points going onto your license and the conviction remaining on your DMV record for 5 years.

Demerit points remain on your record for 2 years from the date that you commit the offense. The dates that the points are removed from your driving record are not related to the dates that convictions are removed from your record.

Depending on your insurance company's rating system your premiums could go up because of this ticket. You will need to check with your agent to find out for certain and get specific information on your provider's rating system
